If there isn't a planned api for Ringotan, a simple interface where the user would paste all kanji to be included in the custom deck would work. Alternatively, Ringotan could read from a text file containing the kanji to be added. Another option would be to read from a sql lite file to add additional information like sections within the deck. One use case for this is that it would allow importing a deck like https://jpdb.io/anime/1579/non-non-biyori with the ability to seperate each uniquely introduced kanjis in sections for each episode similar to the pre-built decks.

A lot of this could be eased by making the kanji and the hiragana selectable so we can copy the text into the devices clipboard, allowing me to just paste it into Anki directly.

Hello - I recently added a comment on an older “problem” post (that had been marked as “solved”) but didn’t see any reply yet, so in case it is exempt from notifications, I wanted to create a new post here.

The original post is: “Option to reveal answer after drawing”.

I would like to revive the discussion of this potential feature, as while I understand and appreciate the hesitation from the developer, I still believe it has a lot of value as an optional “advanced mode” for kanji you have already learned to a high degree.

I will repost my comments here:

————————

I would like to re-request this one, on the basis that it be an optional mode.

I feel the same as @airblaster, I am being influenced by seeing the strokes being revealed as I draw - I sense that I am being given subtle hints (e.g for the 月 radical, is it full height or should I leave space at the bottom for something else to fit? Does this one include the flick at the bottom or not?). I feel that my own recall is not being fully tested.

I also take the point from @BlueRaja about the auto marking system not being able to handle this kind of Freeform input - so how about allowing us to mark our own answer as correct or not when in this mode? After all, we already have this self-marking feature now - if we feel the auto-marking has been unfair (or too fair!) to us, we can override its decision.

I reiterate, this would be an optional mode, not the default. I agree that the best way to learn initially is the way the app does it now. But as a learner gets more advanced, I think it helps to be able to draw from memory alone.

As a potential implementation detail, I believe this would work best as an additional “review style”.

If we define the other styles as being, in order:

* Faint template with each stroke prompted in order
* Faint template with no prompts
* No template with each stroke prompted in order
* No template with pseudo-random stroke prompted after each correct stroke
* No template and no prompts, but after each correct stroke the blue line is painted in

…then what I’m suggesting would be another review style that would come next:

* No template, no prompts, no blue lines painted in, user submits their own final answer before revealing the template, and user has to judge their answer as correct or not (a bit like Anki).

In this sense, the new style is just a logical progression on from the others. Perhaps it would not appear in your reviews until you had sufficiently mastered it in the “easier” styles.

What I’m trying to say is that I still see value in the existing review styles *in the beginning*. But to take it to the final level of mastery, I would like to see this new review style as a feature.

While your app does automatically back up it's progress from a database perspective, it does not currently share this database across separate devices. This is something that needs to be explicitly setup.

As an example, I currently have your app running on both an iPhone and an iPad. Any progress made on the iPhone is not actively synchronized to the app instance on the iPad. The cloud sync that you currently have is simply maintaining a backup of the app in the case of needing to restore a device.

Here are links to the developer documentation and sample code for using native CloudKit, which would enable the functionality I am referring to:

https://developer.apple.com/icloud/cloudkit/
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/cloudkit/
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/cloudkit/enabling_cloudkit_in_your_app
https://github.com/apple?q=cloudkit-sample&type=repository

I would greatly appreciate a way to sync progress between multiple devices and it would bring another layer of functionality to an already amazing app. I know myself and many others would find it incredibly helpful since I'm often switching between my phone and an iPad when I study. As it stands currently, there is no way to do this concurrently and have progress match between devices, which becomes quite frustrating.

If I can help with testing or need to go into any further detail, I'd be happy to! Thanks so much for creating Ringotan, it's helped me so much in my learning progress.

Will it be possible to select two books to study from?

I am about to finish Tobira beginners, I want to switch to the other tobira book, but I’d like to still be interrogated on the first book to maintain my knowledge. Is it possible somehow to select two books or more?

I know that you can change at will, but (correct me if i am wrong) when I finished my daily study of beginner, even if I switch deck, my lessons to reviews will still be at 0. Meaning that if I want to study the same deck everyday, I can’t go to another one.

and thanks for that wonderful[_cuted_]

Where do they get their information from?

compound word study

This might be a lot to ask, or it could be very easy to implement depending on how the app was created. I was wondering if a new mode could be added for compound word study. Nothing major — imagine that after pressing the "Study" button, you have the classic single-kanji study option, plus a second option for compound words.

This second option would work just like the first one, but instead of a single character slot, there would be multiple slots for a specific word. For example, if the question is "警察":

A possible feature could be to only include compounds made up of kanji you've already learned in the normal mode. So you wouldn't see "警察" unless you had already studied both "警" and "察" individually. The more kanji you learn, the more compound words would become available.

I imagined this as an add-on to complement the main study. For example, after reaching "Tensai" or "Senpai" level and above with a new kanji, related compounds could become available in the second mode, alongside other kanji at the same level.

Possible challenges would include screen space limitations or difficulties in implementation depending on how the app was originally designed.
